Good content without authority rarely ranks. Links are what close that gap.
You can have technically sound pages, strong content, and clear keyword targeting , and still sit on page two while a thinner competitor outranks you. In most cases the gap is authority. Google uses backlinks as the primary signal for how much trust to extend to a domain. Without links from relevant, reputable sites, even the best on-page work has a ceiling it cannot break through on its own.
